Verse for Today… For your Encouragement
“Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security” Jeremiah 33:6 (NIV)
Are you concerned about sagging skin after weight loss?
The good news is that sagging skin after weight loss is not enviable. Here a list of things you can do to avoid it. If you already have a sagging skin problem, you can use the tips below to help correct the problem.
The key is maintaining and building lean muscle mass. I’m not talking about “Miss or Mr. America” body builder type muscle mass. I’m talking about the kind of lean muscle mass that keeps us strong and healthy and looking great.
When we lose weight too fast (more than 5 pounds per week), we tend to lose mostly muscle mass. Losing muscle, especially just below the skin causes sagging skin because the skin loses its underlying support. To avoid this, try the following …
Ø Lose weight gradually to avoid lose of muscle.
Ø Use body composition (your lean muscle versus body fat percentage) to gauge your progress and not just scale weight. Scale weight alone will not tell you if you are losing more muscle than fat.
Ø Build lean muscle with a resistance training routine
Ø Drink enough water. Keeping yourself hydrated reduces hunger and helps with weight loss and helps to make your skin look smooth and young. You should drink at least 64 ounces of water per day and more if you can.
Following these simple, but important tips can mean the different between feeling and looking sickly or feeling and looking great. Have you ever noticed that some people look sickly and have an overall droopy look to their body after losing weight? That’s because they lost mostly muscle mass, which gives us our healthy looking body shape.
Action step for Today …
Start tracking your body composition. Two of the easiest ways to do this is with a body fat analyzer scale or skin fold calipers. Skin fold calipers are more accurate, but the body fat analyzer is fine too. I like to use a body fat analyzer scale, because it’s convenient. All I have to do is step on the scale and it gives me my weight and the percentage of fat.
Which ever method you choose, just follow the given instructions and you’ll be on your way.
